The Open Technology Programme (OTP) is a subsidy for application-oriented technical-scientific research. Scientists from all disciplines can apply for subsidy. The programme offers companies and other organisations an accessible way to participate in scientific research that is intended to have societal and/or scientific impact.

Practical information

  • Application period: 13 January 2025 - 12 December 2025, 14:00 CET (or earlier if budget runs out)
  • Budget: Total budget € 25.9 million
    • NWO will fund a maximum of € 950,000 per project. For projects of an investment nature (minimum € 150,000 investment), the maximum contribution is € 1,050,000.
  • Expected number of projects funded: 6 different projects will receive subsidy each month
  • Estimated project duration: maximum of 6 years
  • Subsidy programme: Dutch Research Council (NWO)

For whom?

The programme focuses on consortia consisting of:

  • researchers with permanent or tenure-track appointments at Dutch universities, university medical centres, or certain research institutes such as KNAW and NWO institutes;
  • companies and civil society organisations participating as users and contributing to co-financing.

Conditions

Some important conditions for participation are:

  • Projects should focus on application-oriented technical-scientific research without disciplinary boundaries.
  • Active user involvement is mandatory, including participation in a user committee.
  • If total project costs exceed € 700,000, user co-financing is mandatory, specifically 25% of the amount above € 700,000.
