Bioenergy international

Dutch biomass companies generate most of their revenues from exports. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) helps these companies to do business abroad.

We represent the Netherlands in many long-term European and international projects.

Bioenergy projects in Europe

The following projects also promote and encourage the use of bio-energy in the Netherlands:

  • Concerted Action RED: the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) has resulted in agreements between European Union Member States on the evaluation of the sustainability of biofuels. Also, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency is monitoring the implementation of the updated directive, RED II;
  • ETIP Bio-energy, part of the SET plan: together with the sector, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency has set up a plan to establish bio-energy as part of the European Union's energy mix;
  • ERA-NET Bio-energy and BESTF: a partnership between European Union Member States to give funding for joint research and development projects;
  • European Biomass Conference: knowledge exchange;
  • European research and development: the European Commission uses a range of programmes to give funding for research and development.

Next to these European projects, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency also participates in other projects in the rest of the world.

International Energy Agency (IEA)

Through the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Netherlands works together with many other countries to encourage the use of sustainable energy. IEA has created scenarios for the whole world to help in achieving climate goals. It also advises governments on the use of sustainable energy. Bio-energy is an essential factor in reducing CO2 emissions. It may result in long-term reductions of 20%. More information on this matter can be found in the report published on IEA's website.

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency also participates in the IEA Bio-energy Technology Collaboration Programme. The goal of this programme is to collect knowledge and develop the production of bio-energy around the world. This programme also shows the world what the Netherlands has to offer. All parties involved are working together to develop standards and make agreements to promote the development of bio-energy.

NL Biobased Energy Guide

The Dutch energy sector has published an update of the NL Biobased Energy Guide. The guide offers foreign companies an overview of the innovative Dutch bioenergy sector, including company profiles of companies active in this sector. Download the updated guide here.
