From 5 to 15 March the third round of design workshops of the ‘Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities: Asia’ programme will be organized in Chennai, Khulna and Semarang. The next step in gearing up towards implementing the best inclusive and innovative urban climate adaptation and water management projects.
Only five months ago, six multidisciplinary teams with local and international experts started to work on the urban climate and water related challenges in the city of Khulna, Chennai and Semarang, as part of the Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia programme. After the official kick-off (September/October) of the programme in the three cities, the teams developed their approaches and ideas into conceptual designs (December).
Inclusive and innovative urban water projects
The aim of this third round will be to finalise the teams’ proposals for Urban Water projects and further shape their implementation strategies, based on roundtable discussions and plenary presentations with their stakeholders and possible financial partners. These proposals have to be transformative, bankable, innovative and comprehensive. Furthermore and trough their inclusive capacity and the collaborative approach they should have local support, with a focus on physical infrastructure, developed with local partners. The workshops are being organized by UN-Habitat, WWF/Pegasys, Partners for Resilience, 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) and the Netherlands government in partnership with the three cities.
Parallel to these workshops, the Special Envoy for International Water Affairs will visit New Delhi and Dhaka to connect with relevant stakeholders from government at national level and Development Partners and engage with them about the Water as Leverage programme in close cooperation with the Netherlands Embassies.
Next step: regional workshop Water as Leverage in Singapore 23-25 April 2019
The outcome of the meetings and this third round of local workshops (finalised project proposals and updated implementation strategies) will be the basis for the next encounter with international and other financing institutions to define the best options for the actual implementation of these innovative projects. This will be on 23-25 April in Singapore with the six teams, the three cities as the beneficiaries and the partners of Water as Leverage.
