The Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia (WaL) programme won the Dutch Design Awards 2020 ‘Best Commissioning’ category. This was announced during the DDA Award Show Live on 24 October.

After the announcement, Mr Henk Ovink thanked the jury and the organisation. Mr Ovink is the Netherlands Special Envoy for International Water Affairs. He pointed out that winning this award is a joint effort of all Water as Leverage partners. Their commitment and dedication made the programme a success. Mr Ovink: “This award is not just for the government of the Netherlands. It is an important recognition of our continuing partnership. The partnership uses design, water and joint efforts to make a difference.”

Getting recognition

This award recognises the Water as Leverage approach: inclusive and integrated. Everybody needs to be involved. This includes banks, communities, governments, designers and others. The project focusses on vulnerable communities and improving their living environment. These communities are involved from the very beginning. This award is a great opportunity to bring more of these projects to Asia and the rest of the world.

Water as Leverage

WaL is a partnership between the Dutch government and national and international parties. The programme challenges Dutch businesses in international partnerships to build locally based partnerships. Partnerships design, develop and carry out innovative concepts for sustainable development in cities.
