The Netherlands Enterprise Agency initiated the 'Clean Cooking Sector Support Programme' to strengthen coordination and innovation in the clean cooking sector by supporting stakeholder organisations in Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Ethiopia and Bangladesh. The program has no subsidy scheme, therefore it is not possible to submit a funding application.
Developing markets for clean cooking
Cooking with traditional ovens or on an open fire is responsible for more than 4 million deaths a year in developing countries. This is more than the number of deaths from malaria, TB and AIDS combined. Worldwide there are more than 3 billion people who do not have access to clean cooking appliances. These people cook with wood, charcoal or biomass waste. The use of these cooking fuels contributes significantly to climate change. As such the coming together of international and local governments, companies and NGOs is important for the development of commercial markets for cleaner, more efficient cookstoves that emit less smoke. This cooperation gives people in developing countries access to these technologies.
The importance of access to clean energy is recognised by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By 2030, everyone must have access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy (SDG 7). The Clean Cooking Alliance plays a strong connecting role at the international level. At the national level, 'national alliances' (multi-stakeholder organisations) can play a central role in the cooking energy sector. In recent years, we have focused on strengthening the capacity of the 'National Alliances for Clean Cooking' together with SNV and GIZ under the EnDev programme.
The Clean Cooking Sector Support programme, has made progress in projects in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda in a relatively short time. The national alliances have succeeded in bringing together key stakeholders from the private sector, government, knowledge institutions and civil society by increasing coordination and supporting clean cooking interventions.
