The ‘Cycle the Dutch way’ media tour gave journalists from Central and South America a better understanding of the Netherlands and insight into both the history of and current developments in Dutch cycling infrastructure, safety and sustainability. After the tour journalists could attend the Velo-city 2017 conference in Nijmegen and Arnhem, an annual international planning conference that promotes cycling for daily transport and recreation.
Highlights of the tour included a visit to the Netherlands’ biggest indoor bicycle parking facility in Utrecht, with a total of 12,500 parking spaces, and a visit to the municipality of Eindhoven, which is gradually implementing a more pro-bicycle policy. The journalists also did a bit of cycling themselves on bicycles manufactured by Beixo, a company focused on sustainable transport solutions, as well as on wooden bikes, electric bikes and folding bikes. At a primary school, the delegation saw how children are taught about road safety for cyclists. Finally, the delegation visited the town of Houten, the Hoge Veluwe National Park and Fietsfabriek, a bicycle experience centre.
