The European Commission invited a delegation of Japanese journalists to Brussels for a programme about the Common Agricultural Policy. After two days of lectures in Brussels the delegates visited the Netherlands at their own request, as they were curious about the Netherlands’ success as the world’s second largest agricultural and horticultural exporter.
The stops on the tour were all showcases for the sector, from an ultramodern greenhouse, to the sustainable and animal-friendly Rondeel poultry farm, to the miniature vegetable grower Koppert Cress. The journalists also visited Wageningen University and Research Centre for presentations on agri-robots and taste and horticultural research. A visit to the Ministry of Economic Affairs demonstrated the many similarities between Dutch and Japanese industry.
Finally, in a warehouse for Gouda Holland cheese the Dutch Dairy Association explained the EU scheme for protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications and what it means for Dutch products.
