Strategic Trade Fair Programme (SBP)
The Strategic Trade Fair Programme supports trade associations, membership organisations and Trade and Innovate NL (TINL) partners in organising joint participation in international trade fairs in the Netherlands or abroad.
Budget and application period
Purpose of the programme
The purpose of this subsidy programme is to expand the international network and visibility of Dutch SMEs, SMEs from the Dutch Caribbean Islands of the Kingdom and knowledge institutions through joint participation in international trade fairs. This also helps them increase their business opportunities abroad.
This new programme is a merger of 2 older programmes: MKB Lounge and SBP.
For whom?
Trade associations, membership organisations and TINL partners based in the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands may apply. The subsidy is designed to fund the organisation of joint participation in international trade fairs in the Netherlands or abroad.
Organisations wishing to apply for this subsidy must have an internationalisation strategy for the sector. Applicants are also required to have at least 2 years of experience in organising activities for international trade fairs.
Budget
A total of €1,300,000 is available for the Strategic Trade Fair Programme for this application round. This amount is spread across 3 categories:
- Dutch lounges, Dutch pavilions and networking activities - €400,000
- Dutch pavilions and/or networking activities at a trade fair for a strategically designated sector - €425,000
- Dutch pavilions and networking activities at strategically designated trade fairs - €475,000
Conditions
Trade associations, membership organisations and TINL partners wishing to apply for this subsidy must have:
- an internationalisation strategy for the sector;
- at least 2 years of experience in organising activities for international trade fairs.
Per application round:
- Subsidies may be applied for in 1 of 3 categories. It is not possible to apply for subsidies in 2 different categories for a single trade fair.
- Subsidy can be assigned a maximum of 4 times per round, of which a maximum of 2 times for category 3.
- Trade associations and membership organisations with more than 500 members can be assigned a maximum of 6 subsidy applications, of which a maximum of 2 for category 3.
Characteristics per category
Below you see the characteristics and conditions for each category.
Category 1 is meant for organising joint participation in Dutch lounges, Dutch pavilions, and networking activities at an international trade fair. The maximum subsidy amount is between €25,000 and €49,999. The subsidy covers 80% of the eligible costs.
Category 1 subsidies can be applied for by all sectors.
Characteristics of category 1:
- A minimum of 8 participants take part in a Dutch lounge.
- A minimum of 8 participants take part in a Dutch pavilion with their own stand.
- A minimum of 8 participants take part in the collective networking activity.
Category 2 is meant for organising joint participation in Dutch pavilions and/or networking activities at an international trade fair for a strategically designated sector. The maximum subsidy amount is between €50,000 and €124,999. The subsidy covers 80% of the eligible costs.
What is a strategically designated sector?
Each year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs determines which sectors are classified as "strategically designated". For 2026, these are:
- HTSM and ICT
- defence-related applications
- biotechnology and LSH
- innovative chemistry
- sustainable energy
- agritech
- water and maritime
- critical raw materials
Characteristics of category 2:
- A minimum of 10 participants take part in a Dutch pavilion with their own stand.
- A minimum of 10 participants take part in the collective networking activity.
Category 3 is meant for organising joint participation in Dutch pavilions and networking activities at strategically designated trade fairs. The maximum subsidy amount is between €125,000 and €200,000. The subsidy covers 80% of the eligible costs.
What is a strategically designated trade fair?
Each year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs determines which trade fairs qualify as "strategically designated". These are trade fairs that are important for the sector and for the minister's policy objectives. The strategically designated trade fairs for the first application round are:
- Hannover Messe (Germany)
- SXSW (United States)
- SMM Hamburg (Germany)
- RSA Conference (United States)
- SEMICON West (United States)
- SEMICON Europe (Germany)
- Photonics West (United States)
- Bio International Convention (United States)
- MEDICA (Germany)
- HLTH (Netherlands)
- DMEA (Germany)
- GreenTech Amsterdam (Netherlands)
Characteristics of category 3:
- All trade fairs, with the exception of the RSA, require a minimum of 10 participants. The RSA requires a minimum of 8 participants.
Application periods
There will be 2 application periods this year:
- The first application period starts on 23 February and ends on 20 March.
- The second application period will start around September.
We will not accept applications outside these 2 periods.
Apply
To apply for the Strategic Trade Fair Programme (SBP), follow these steps:
1. Select 1 of the 3 categories. Download the accompanying documents:
- the SBP application form;
- the format for the action plan, and;
- the format for the budget.
2. Complete the application form, the action plan, and the budget.
3. From 23 February 2026 you will find the application button here to submit your application.
After your application
You will receive a response within 13 weeks after submitting your subsidy application.
