DRRS Programme is looking for experts for remote support to UNEP in Ukraine on the Assessment of Environmental Impacts of the Nova Kakhovka dam breach, starting as soon as possible.

Goal of the mission

The focus of the remote DRRS mission will be to support UNEP in the Assessment of Environmental Impacts of Nova Kakhovka dam breach.

Requirements

The experts needs to be able to contribute to one or more of the following aspects:

  • Assessment of geomorphological changes following the event on delta, reservoir, coastal and marine areas, considering effects of water regime changes and sediment deposits.
  • Assessment of direct and indirect impacts of the event on wetlands, habitats, and biodiversity, both upstream and downstream of the dam.
  • Assessment of the short-, medium- and long-term health and environmental impacts of chemical contamination caused by the event, e.g., through sediment deposits and other pollutants.
  • Recommendations for further environmental assessments to be undertaken, including recommendations for sampling and analysis.
  • Recommendations for priority remediation actions to mitigate priority risks to delta, reservoir, coastal and marine areas.
  • Recommendations for dam, flood and reservoir management options that mitigate priority environmental risks and, to the extent possible, apply nature-based solutions.
