Open Competition Domain Science - M

Within the Open Competition ENW, researchers at Dutch knowledge institutions can apply for subsidies for curiosity-driven, basic research in the exact and natural sciences. They can apply individually or in collaboration. These research projects promote innovative and groundbreaking scientific insights.
Practical information
- Application period: until 31 July 2025, 14:00 CEST. If 420 applications are received, the competition will close earlier. The 2025-2026 round is not yet open.
- Budget: total budget € 50 million
- ENW-M-1: maximum € 400,000 for one single main applicant with no co-applicants.
- ENW-M-2: maximum € 800,000 for one single main applicant with one co-applicant with complementary expertise.
- ENW-M-invest: between € 150,000 and € 500,000 for investments in research equipment.
- Estimated project duration: up to 6 years
- Subsidy programme: Dutch Research Council (NWO)
For whom?
The programme focuses on:
- university (head) lecturers and professors with a permanent appointment at Dutch universities or recognised research institutes (main applicants);
- researchers with complementary expertise, depending on the module chosen (co-applicants).
Conditions
- Projects must fit within the exact and natural sciences domain and contribute to fundamental scientific knowledge.
- You apply in English.
- A main applicant or co-applicant may only submit an ENW-M application once every 12 months.
- The maximum project duration is 6 years.
