Open Competition Domain Science – XS package 25-2

Within the Open Competition ENW-XS, doctoral researchers at Dutch knowledge institutions can apply for subsidies for curiosity-driven and adventurous research in the exact and natural sciences. The subsidy allows researchers to explore promising ideas quickly.

Practical information

  • Application period:
    • round 1: until 6 May 2025, 14:00 CEST
    • round 2: until 8 May 2025, 14:00 CEST
    • round 3: until 18 September 2025, 14:00 CEST
  • Budget: € 2.4 million, maximum € 50,000 per project
  • Estimated project duration: 12 months
  • Subsidy programme: Dutch Research Council (NWO)

For whom?

The scheme is for doctoral researchers who have an appointment at a Dutch university or recognised research institute for the project's duration.

Conditions

  • Applications are assessed on innovation (high-risk/high-gain), feasibility within one year, and broad accessibility for other disciplines.
  • Fellow applicants assess each other in a mutual assessment system within 2 clusters (Life Sciences or Physical & Exact Sciences).
  • There is no rebuttal; the granting is based on prioritisation and the available budget.
