International humanitarian organisations ask Dutch Surge Support (DSS water) for help with water-related disasters worldwide. DSS water quickly sends experts to offer emergency aid. DSS water helps save lives and improve living conditions in affected areas. DSS experts provide emergency aid immediately after humanitarian disasters. They share their knowledge on clean water, sanitation, water management and wastewater management.

Improving emergency aid together

The Netherlands aims to improve the international approach to water disasters through DSS water. DSS water also works to improve knowledge on emergency aid. The Dutch government started DSS water, a close cooperation with Dutch water companies and the Dutch Red Cross.

Expert pool

DSS water has a pool of experts from the Dutch water sector. These experts have different kinds of water knowledge. After signing up, experts can respond to requests for emergency aid. These requests come from international humanitarian organisations such as UNICEF, UNHCR, WHO and IOM. Next, DSS water and the organisation that asked for help select a suitable candidate. The NWP database is closed; we are now using the new, in-house database.

Opportunities for Dutch water companies

The Dutch government and the water companies work together. In this way, the right Dutch experts can quickly get to the right place. The expert teams then start providing emergency aid right away. It also gives Dutch water companies a better chance of winning contracts for follow-up work. Follow-up work may involve projects to prevent water disasters, the focus of the Dutch Risk Reduction Team (DRR-Team).
