Innovation mission France: nuclear technologies
Are you active in research and innovation in the nuclear sector, such as reactor and fuel technology, nuclear fuels, and radioactive waste processing and storage? Would you like to find out what is happening in this field in France and establish or strengthen contacts with French experts? Then, join this nuclear technologies innovation mission in France.

The Netherlands aims to make electricity production CO2-neutral by 2035 at the latest. Nuclear energy can make an essential contribution to achieving this goal. The government is preparing for the construction of 4 nuclear power plants. The option for small modular reactors (SMRs) is also being considered. For these ambitions, international cooperation is crucial, particularly in acquiring knowledge and expertise regarding nuclear reactor and fuel cycle technology, materials, the fuel cycle, radiation protection, safety, perception, communication, and public support. Additionally, international collaboration is essential for developing and strengthening the Dutch and European nuclear value chain.
Why participate?
This innovation mission will introduce Dutch stakeholders to the French nuclear ecosystem and its strengths, constraints, and challenges. This will allow Dutch stakeholders to explore cooperation opportunities and build and strengthen their networks in France. Topics include research and innovation in the fields of:
- nuclear reactor and fuel technologies, including SMRs;
- radiation protection;
- nuclear fuels;
- radioactive waste processing and storage.
For whom?
The mission targets, among others, researchers, business developers, and managers of companies and knowledge institutions engaged in research and innovation in nuclear technologies.
Provisional programme
The mission program is still being developed. We are organizing visits to government and knowledge institutions and companies. Possible components of the program include visits to:
- a nuclear power plant ;
- representatives of the manufacturing industry;
- knowledge institutions;
- a company that manages and processes waste.
In addition to these program items, we will do our best to consider further suggestions from the participants into account.
Costs
The costs for participation in the innovation mission are € 250, excluding VAT per person. This includes:
- participation in the collective programme;
- transfers to and from programme components;
- lunch and dinners, if mentioned in the programme.
Participation excludes:
- travel and accommodation costs;
- all individual costs, such as personal transfers, lunches and dinners outside the programme.
Registration
Would you like to participate in this innovation mission? If so, please register by Friday 11 April 2025, using the online application form.

Background information about France
With approximately 70% of its electricity production from nuclear power and 57 operational atomic reactors, France possesses extensive nuclear knowledge and expertise. Since 2019, France has had the ambition to build 6 new nuclear reactors. At the beginning of 2024, this ambition was increased to 14 new reactors. France is investing in innovative designs; for instance, it has one (of the 3 worldwide) operational EPRs (European Pressurized Reactors). Through the France 2030 program, €1 billion has been allocated for developing of SMRs and AMRs. Finally, Électricité de France (EDF) is one of the 3 technology providers that in 2024 initiated a study to assess the technical feasibility of 2 nuclear reactors at the preferred location in Borssele.
In October 2024, Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Minister Sophie Hermans of Climate and Green Growth signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen cooperation in nuclear energy and create opportunities for businesses and research institutions. This innovation mission is also being established to enhance collaboration and knowledge exchange between the Dutch and French sectors.
