Heat in the built environment

The risk of extreme heat in the Netherlands is increasing. The Heat Menu shows at a glance what steps a municipality can take to become "heat-proof" at health, building and area level.

The Menu has now been updated and new tools have been added to help municipalities get started with the theme of heat:

  • The Heat Menu provides an overview of all effects of heat that are within the action perspective of municipalities. In addition, the menu provides an overview of the goals and measures that a municipality can take, and more information can be found based on the experiences of other municipalities.
  • The Integrated Heat Action Plan Guide is a fully detailed step-by-step plan for working with your municipality on the theme of heat. Not only are all steps clearly explained, there are also tools available for each step to help you shape the process.
  • The Heat Menu Brochure gives a short impression of the method. This shows in clear steps how the Guide is structured and gives you experience stories from the ten pilot municipalities.

Usage

With the Heat Adaptation Menu, a municipality, together with relevant partners, can develop an Integrated Heat Action Plan with attention to Health, Housing and Habitat. The method to arrive at such an Integrated Heat Action Plan was developed during a pilot with 10 municipalities in 2023. The results of this pilot have been incorporated into the Integrated Heat Action Plan Guide (Handreiking Integraal Actieplan Hitte in Dutch):

The brochure, Integrated Heat Action Plan Guide and the Heat Menu were developed on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and RVO, in close collaboration with the Netherlands Climate Association, TAUW and &flux.
