Batteries are crucial to the sustainable energy transition. The battery market is growing significantly, and the Netherlands targets specific market segments. This creates business opportunities for the Dutch battery sector. Batteries International is a programme that helps Dutch entrepreneurs to make use of those opportunities.

What is Batteries International?

Batteries International is part of the International Clean Energy Partnership (ICEP). Through this programme, the government of the Netherlands supports entrepreneurs from the sustainable energy and battery sector in doing business abroad.

Battery technology is one of the most important parts of the global energy transition. It plays a crucial role in sustainable mobility, energy systems and the broader electrification of our economy. The Dutch government is committed to making smart use of business opportunities in the battery sector.

The Strategic Approach Batteries report (in Dutch) promotes the cooperation within the battery supply chains, battery innovation and circular procedures. Its goal is to make the Netherlands a hub for circular batteries. This requires a dynamic ecosystem with an innovative Dutch battery sector.

For whom?

The Batteries International programme targets parties that are active in the battery sector. These companies and organisations must also be prepared to do business abroad. The programme focuses, among other things, on:

  • Raw materials and refinery
  • Cel production
  • Battery packs and integration
  • Battery Management Systems (BMS)
  • Second-life applications
  • Recycling and urban mining
  • Storage solutions for grid congestion

Why invest in batteries?

The global battery market is growing exponentially. Countries in Asia, especially China, currently control the market. Still, there are plenty of business opportunities for Dutch entrepreneurs in specific battery sectors.

The Netherlands, for instance, has a strong position in the transport market. Dutch entrepreneurs manufacture electric lorries, buses, and ships. This industry needs specific battery solutions, and the Dutch battery sector can make a difference.

Additionally, batteries are essential to power Europe's energy system, for instance, through long-term energy storage.

The Netherlands develops innovative solutions to make batteries better and more sustainable. Moreover, the Dutch battery industry works hard to increase its recycling capacity. This is important to recover critical raw materials.
