Hydrogen International
Hydrogen is an energy carrier that is vital for the production of climate-neutral energy. It creates business opportunities for the Netherlands' hydrogen sector and attracts foreign investments.
What is Hydrogen International?
Hydrogen plays a vital role in reducing CO2 emissions and slowing climate change. It also contributes to the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Green hydrogen
According to an International Energy Agency (IEA) report, there is a global market for green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is produced from sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar. It presents international business opportunities for the Dutch renewable energy sector.
Hydrogen International is part of the International Clean Energy Partnership (ICEP). Through this programme, the Dutch government supports entrepreneurs from the sustainable energy and hydrogen sector in doing business abroad.

For whom?
The Hydrogen International programme focuses on parties active in the renewable energy sector, specifically the hydrogen sector. These companies and organisations must also be ready to do business abroad.
Why invest in hydrogen?
The Dutch hydrogen sector is well-known throughout the world. It is because the Netherlands has:
- a highly developed natural gas infrastructure;
- knowledge of and experience with hydrogen;
- significant potential for extensive hydrogen storage;
- large offshore wind energy deployments with hydrogen integration opportunities;
- strong manufacturing industry;
- major ports and a significant transport infrastructure.
Interesting hydrogen projects
Currently, there are more than 150 hydrogen projects in the Netherlands.
- Dutch energy network operator Gasunie is developing a hydrogen infrastructure that connects Dutch ports with our neighbours through an extensive industrial network.
- There are several projects in built environments.
- Some projects are being developed to prepare ports for large-scale hydrogen imports.
- Energy companies, such as Engie and Equinor, consider the Netherlands to be a leader in the hydrogen sector and want to start large projects here.

Partners
The Dutch hydrogen sector cooperates with Platform Waterstof Internationaal (PWI).
Platform Waterstof Internationaal
Platform Waterstof Internationaal (PWI) was founded in PWI in 2021 by:
- The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO)
- The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- FME (an association representing the tech industry)
PWI was founded in collaboration with Topsector Energie, NWBA, New Energy Coalition, and the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. Later, IRO and NLHydrogen joined PWI.
PWI brings public and private parties together to:
- inform the Dutch hydrogen sector about developments in foreign markets, reports, events, and visits;
