Who is this for?

The permit round for Nederwiek I-B is aimed at wind farm developers and energy companies seeking to generate sustainable energy and contribute to the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy (energy transition). This will help strengthen the energy independence and resilience of the Dutch energy system.

Location of the Nederwiek I-B site

Which area is involved?

The NW I-B Site starts approximately 95 km off the coast, located in the northern part of the province of North Holland (Den Helder and Texel region). The total surface area of the NW I-B Site is approximately 110 km2.

NW I-B is part of the Nederwiek Wind Farm Zone. This area consists of 4 plots (I-A, I-B, II, and III). Together, they cover a total area of approximately 600 km² (including maintenance and safety zones). These 4 plots have a combined capacity of around 6 GW of installed offshore wind energy.

In September 2024, we split the Nederwiek I site into 2 sites: Nederwiek I-A and Nederwiek I-B (each 1 GW). This division reduces the financial risks for you as a wind farm developer. A 1 GW site lowers the high investment costs per project, making smaller plots easier to finance and operate. This way, we ensure that you can more easily make a profit with your wind farm.

How does electricity get from sea to land?

Transmission system operator TenneT is installing the offshore grid that will connect the wind farms to the onshore high-voltage grid. This is how the wind energy generated is fed into our electricity grid. The wind farm will be connected to a TenneT substation platform for this purpose. The platforms have a 2 GW Direct Current (DC) connection to an onshore substation. This means that 2 wind farms, each with a capacity of 1 GW, will be connected to a single platform. The DC connection ensures a constant voltage on the electricity grid.

The NW I-A and NW I-B sites (with a capacity of 1 GW each) will connect to a single offshore energy platform near Borssele. This ensures the best possible use of the offshore grid. Connecting both sites to a single platform also requires less work and time.

Site characterisation studies

Together with our partners, we conduct site studies in the Nederwiek wind farm zone. The data and reports from the site studies are published on offshorewind.rvo.nl (English). With the data from these site studies, you can plan and optimise the design of the offshore wind farm.

Applications

At present, it is not yet known when you will be able to apply for a permit for this wind farm. As soon as further details are available, you will read them on this page.
