The Netherlands has big ambitions for the generation of sustainable energy, especially through offshore wind farms. To meet its goals, a lot of investment is needed in innovation that does not just focus on the Dutch market. The Netherlands' strong maritime reputation and international climate agreements are opening up opportunities in international markets.

Supporting the offshore wind energy sector

Cooperation between the sector and the government is needed to make use of these opportunities. The opportunities will benefit SMEs in particular. ICEP supports the Dutch offshore wind energy sector, for example, by:

  • economic diplomacy;
  • conducting strategic market research; and
  • participating in trade missions, international conferences and trade fairs.

Through a so-called Offshore Wind Export Committee, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency works closely with the Dutch diplomatic network and other sector associations, including:

  • Netherlands Wind Energy Association (NWEA);
  • Holland Home Of Wind Energy (HHWE);
  • IRO (Association of Dutch Suppliers in the Offshore Energy Industry), and
  • Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the sector organisations focus currently on the following countries and regions:

  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Taiwan

Unique selling points Dutch offshore wind sector

The Netherlands has one of the most successful and innovative offshore wind policy initiatives, enterprises, maritime companies and research institutions in the world. To generate more international attention for the expertise of Dutch companies, ICEP has developed the Dutch Offshore Wind Guide together with the sector.

This guide provides a complete overview of the offshore wind expertise of the Dutch business community at this moment. Both in the field of policy development and accumulated knowlegde on:

  • Site research;
  • project development;
  • transportation and installation; and
  • operation and maintenance of offshore wind parks.

In addition, the guide discusses the latest export successes and the latest state of affairs regarding R&D research and innovations that lead to further reduction of costs. This cost reduction makes offshore wind even more attractive.
